Evergreen Content: why’s it so special?
Evergreen content. Sounds like something an environmentalist would be concerned with, but it’s not, not necessarily anyway. Maybe you’ve heard this word getting around and you’re not really sure what it is, how to create it or even why you should bother. Well, whether you understand digital marketing, content creation, SEO or not, we’re here to help you out in understanding the what, how and why for creating evergreen content.
What is Evergreen Content?
Evergreen content is essentially content that is long lasting, think evergreen tree. And content that lasts is great because it will always be relevant and can be used over and over. Evergreen content is bulletproof against trends meaning people will always want to consume this type of content.
This is a great definition from Metricool
‘’Evergreen content is content that persists over time, that is, it doesn’t have an expiration date and can’t become obsolete. This type of content will have the same value for users today or in a year. Time goes very quickly on the internet and content has a very short life within the network.’’
Think about these two post ideas for a fashion designer.
- A post announcing the arrival of dresses inspired by Paris runways that will soon be for sale.
- A post on how to style a simple tee in 5 ways.
Have a think about which post has longevity and will stay current for longer? Which may end up being referred to or linked to in other articles, blog hosting sites, social media accounts etc. in the next few years?
The first one is very specific to a particular event and period of time meaning in a few months no one is likely to need or want this information anymore. The second however will remain current as it is not linked specifically to a time or event and there will always be people wanting to know how to style a simple tee five ways. One is trend based, the other is education based.
Evergreen Content Ideas
To create evergreen content try and think of something that won’t need updating or won’t be out of date in a few months or even a year.
Common evergreen content ideas include:
- How to’s
- Online Reviews
- Quizzes and surveys
- Tips or lists
- Solutions to FAQ’s
- Videos (depending on content)
The following are also great content ideas, however, if your plan is to create evergreen content try and avoid things like:
- Articles and news updates
- Statistics that will change over time
- Any type of trend
- Seasonal content
How can evergreen content help with your SEO and vice versa.
A good way to help you come up with evergreen topics which will help with SEO is to create content around your keywords and what your business does. This will help increase the chances of people searching that keyword and landing on your page. As long as your keywords don’t change, this content will remain relevant and help direct people wanting to learn more about them to your page.
It’s also a great place to start if you are stuck for ideas! Not sure what to create? Think about one of your services. What’s the history? How does it work? Is there anything that people might want to learn about it? Can you create a ‘how to’ for it?
An added bonus to evergreen content is that it generally lends quite well to back-linking, sharing and promoting after the initial posting. This is because it doesn’t normally date or align specifically to one time, event, person, trend etc. meaning more people, accounts and businesses are able to use it, linking their site and audience back to you. Again this will drive more links and traffic to your page and business.
