How to get more clicks more often (secret tip)
You’ve probably heard the term “Click-through rate” or “CTR” in digital circles, but what is it, what does it mean and why should you be learning the industry secrets to help improve yours.
In this post, I’m going to take you through the in’s and out’s, do’s and don’ts as well as giving you some of my secret tips.
So what is a CTR?
A click-through rate (CTR) is exactly as it reads, it’s the rate at which users are clicking on whatever it is you are wanting them to click on, simple enough? So, for example if you created a kick-ass add on Facebook which reached 1000 users and had 150 clicks, that my friend is a 15% click-through rate. A CTR of 15% is HUGE for a Facebook ad with the average sitting around .89%.
How do I improve my CTR?
There are many ways to improve your CTR, a simple Google search will present you with dozens of different ways you can do it. But if that sounds like a snooze fest to you, just read my favourites below.
1. Don’t ignore your past (data)
This most likely isn’t your first rodeo so look at the data on your previous posts/ newsletters/ blogs and see if you can find patterns with the higher click through rates. Maybe it was the time of day you posted or a particular word you wrote. This data is your baby, so don’t put baby in the corner. Use it!
2. Use POWER words
There are certain words out there that marketing experts have deemed “POWER” words. They are words that are highly effective at improving CTR. The secret to power words appeal to the two personality traits most people have – greed and impatience.
Words like FREE, SECRET, BEST appeals to our greediness, we all want free stuff, we all want the secret tips that will put us ahead of the competition and we all want the best there is.
Words like QUICK, FAST, NOW appeals to our impatience. What do we want? The fastest method of improving our CTR and when do we want it? NOW.
3. Don’t just end it
When writing a blog post, ad, or newsletter you need to end everything with a clear call to action telling readers exactly what you want them to do. Don’t end a post without giving the customer the opportunity to engage with you and your business. For example use “Click here to learn more” or “Sign up today to receive your gift”.
2019 studies revealed that emails with a single call-to-action increased clicks by 371% and sales by 1617%.
4. Use kick-ass images
When it comes to social media, finding a good image is more important than writing the copy. Writing the copy is important as it’s the copy that will get someone to click but without a kick-ass image, potential customers won’t even stop to read your post.
Spend time (and money) on high-quality images that will force your customer to stop and read.
This is also relevant to newsletters and blog posts as well, the use of images add colour, break up large chunks of content and deliver emotion to the customer, never skip out on finding a good image.

Conclusion (and super-secret tip)
CTR is an important metric and you need to be doing everything you can to improve it, every extra click you receive is another opportunity to make a sale (or a friend).
There are many ways to improve CTR, these 4 I have shared are not the be all end all and different tips may be more effective on different mediums. Play around with some A/B testing to see what works for you and your customers.
An awesome study I read recently explained how this company found using [brackets] or (parentheses) got 38% more clicks than titles without. That is a huge number and such an easy tactic to implement into your posts. Why don’t you try it on your next blog or social media ad title?
