Pop-ups on your website can be an amazing marketing tool to capture more leads and increase conversions. They can be, if not done properly they can also really frustrate your customers and even push them away from your website but they can be really really valuable.

A recent study found that pop-ups can convert at a rate of 3% on percent now it’s not great but really well-designed pop-ups that utilize advanced triggering have a chance to convert at 9 percent and that’s what we want. So I’m going to take you through a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to website pop-ups.

Don’t use pop-ups on every single page and definitely not the first page, take time with the design, make your pop-up beautiful and responsive, remember mobile screens are smaller so if your pop-up isn’t responsive then there’s no use of having it.

Don’t use pop-ups that take up the entire screen and hide the rest of the website behind it.

Do use advanced triggering like timing your pop-ups to appear just as they’re about to leave and only seeing it once.

Don’t use interstituals, this is when a pop-up displays while the rest of the website is still loading behind it.

And finally always always give a clear way to close the pop-up, without these customers might feel like you’re trying to trick them or force them into doing something they don’t want to do and that is a sure way to break their trust, a good example of a pop-up is, let’s say I’m on a product page and I’m not quite sure if I want to buy yet so I go to browse another store and see if I can find a better deal but as I’m about to leave, I see this well-designed pop-up offering me five percent off, so I buy it.

Pop-ups can be tricky to get right but can be an invaluable tool to increasing sales and driving conversions.
